Old-time and contemporary, simple and deep, unadorned and professional, Appalachia and Berklee School of Music—and achingly beautiful. Any of Welch’s first four albums could fit here. “Time (The Revelator)” has a slight edge because of slightly better songs—such as, “My First Lover,” “Red Clay Halo,” “I Want to Sing That Rock and Roll,” and “Everything is Free.”
