This was the first record in a kind of trilogy of kind of gospel music that Morrison released between 1989 and 1991 (the other two being “Enlightenment” and “Hymns to the Silence”). It marked what now may be seen as his last great peak of outstanding music (though certainly since then he has produced many more fine records). Two of his most popular songs are here—”Have I Told You Lately” and “Whenever God Shines His Light.” Several other songs now impress me more: “Daring Night,” “When Will I Ever Learn to Live in God,” and “These are the Days,” perhaps because they admit to a bit more ambiguity.
